Mathblaster Review

Just before Christmas I was approached to do a review of Mathblaster.com.  Mathblaster is made by Knowledge Adventure, the same people who put out jumpstart.com.  It is a game based around math for 6 to 12 year old.  They can create their own avatars called blasters.  Once they have created the Blaster they go through training (math games).
This is a shot of what it looks like when the game starts.  In this area it has the sections that leads off to the different worlds.  It has a bar along the bottom of the screen.  On this bar the kids have access to their friends and can even change their Blasters looks whenever they want.
The boys absolute favorite part of the game is that you can get a pet.  You can name them, or choose the randomizer to help them name them.  The pets do go through an incubation period.  Even though the boys do love this feature Sam has found one down side to it that he does not care for.  Sometimes you cannot get into certain games with out having the pet with you.
This is obviously a game meant for the kids and it is a lot of fun for them.  However I have not had such a good time with it.  As fun as it is for kids there is a lot of stimulation going on for me.  So my husband was a sweetheart and played the game for me so that you could have a little better view of the game.  The picture below is the blaster that he created.  What a good looking man I have.  LOL.

I found it to be entertaining.  You get to play all sorts of math type of games. Some games teach math functions such as fractions and other games teach logic and eye-hand coordination.  I only played for about 20 minutes.  In that time I created the above character (isn't he cute!).  I also found a pet and brought him to incubation.  The incubation takes about 12 hours.  I am not sure it is 12 hours of playing time or 12 hours real time.  While the pet is incubating you collect different "powers" (lack of a better word) that the pet needs to grow in incubation.  So the game also teaches the child how to care for his/her pet.

Now for the fun part.  Mathblaster is allowing me to giveaway a 3 month membership to one of my readers.  With the membership it also comes with a bonus membership to jumpstart.com.  To win this all you have to do is leave me a note here by Friday, January 13th.  I will draw the winner and annouce on Saturday the 14th.

Disclosure: I was provided with a membership good for Math Blaster and JumpStart at no cost by Knowledge Adventure in order to test the products’ abilities and give my own personal opinions on it. The opinions I have given are mine and may differ from others but were not influenced by the company or the free product provided.”

SpellQuizzer -- Review and Giveaway

Hello long time no chat. Well I am back with someting real good for you. One of the things that I love about the blog world is that you never know who is going to read it. Since I have started the blog I have had a couple of chances to review some great products, and this is one of them, SpellQuizzer. This is all because of the blog. I am very thankful for these oppurtunities.

Now for the review. As a parent, education is one of our main concerns for our children. We know that if it is not fun they are never going to want try it. Then that makes it hard for them to learn anything if they do not try. We are always on the lookout for ways to make it fun for them. An area that has been hard for us to make fun is spelling. Well that is until now, The SpellQuizzer is changing that. It is not a game but a way for the kids to hear their spelling words. You can take your list of words and record them in the program with sentences so the kids can also hear how they are used too. The thing that my kids find fun is that it gave them a way to have their dad be apart of their lessons. See he is an accountant so this has been a busy time of the year for him. It keeps him away from the boys a little to much. He recorded the list for them and made really silly sentences for each of the words. They loved it because they felt like dad was here doing it with them. The thing I loved is that at the end they have chances to retry words that they missed. Also if you go to their site there is communities where you can discuss things with other parents. You can even upload their list to use.

If you have not heard of them you should really check them out they are great. Better yet they are giving me a chance to giveway a license to their program. Want it here is what you can do, first leave me a message on here. If you would like some other chances though go to facebook and become a fan of them or write on your blog linking back here. If you do either of them, or both, please make sure to come back here telling me what you did so I can give you entries for them too. I am going to hold this open until next sunday. I will announce the winner on Monday the 19th. So good luck.

Edited to add... Since no one signed up yet for the giveaway I am going to extended it to monday the 26th... Make sure to sign up, it is a really great product.

JUMPSTART.COM REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

Ok I know that most of you saw over on Kate's blog that she got the chance to review jumpstart.com, I got the chance too. How great is that. I love giving the kids the oppurtunity to learn through games. I mean who wants to learn using only worksheets, how boring! So when Cherie contacted me offering the chance to review this I thought great the boys are going think I am the best mother ever. hehehe.
Boy was I right the kids are loving the site. Even on our old laptop (which would make the game freeze because it was so old) the kids became infatuated with this game. They even knew that they were learning with it and still wanted to play. As a matter of fact they would say to me can we play, it is a learning game. I mean how can I say no. Well we solved the problem of the computer freezing and bought a new one. Now I am fighting to get time on the computer because the boys are loving it even more. I must admit that I am having fun on it too. There is so much to see and do. The site even has a parents section and a blog too. Check over on my side bar if you want to check out the blog.
Well with the new computer we are able to play games on our CD ROM. The boys have loved the site so much they asked if we could get the games that they have. I thought that this would be great because on the site it ranges from ages 3 to 10, this means that Sam would not be able to play with it much longer because he would not be challenged enough with it. So while out at BJs tonight we found a 4th to 6th grade advanced for him. He is so excited to have it.
All in All Jumpstart has once again had a hit in the learning department. They even amazed me with staff. Cherie worked really hard to get my membership set up for me. Unfortunetly there was something wrong so I could not get into the account at first . When I notified her of this she worked on it and got it fixed right away.
Our family has been really excited to have this oppurtunity to use the site. Jumpstart wants to give your family the chance to experience it too. If you want to get a three month membership leave me a message between now and Thursday. In the message tell me what is your favorite thing to learn with. Feel free to mention this on your blog and link back to give all of your friends a chance too.
