As a fun way to get the clothing study for New Zealand in the boys got to design some. The only thing that I made was the dolls to get them started. Then each of the boys designed the patterns and made the pieces. Once they sewed it together they added any extra embellishments that they wanted. Sam made the girl on the right and Gabe made the boy on the left. We try to do a lot of things to help both boys, but Gabe in particular. When he was younger he got diagnosed with Sensory integration and low muscle tone. These activities really do help him. Looking for ideas for a new activity I came across the idea for snow dough.
All you need is two ingredients, Baking soda and conditioner. You need 3 cups of baking soda to 1/2 cup of the conditioner. So I got the nice big box for $2 at wal-mart. Even though all the other pictures have Gabe in it, Sam did play with it too. Those are his hands, he is a teenage boy that hates having his picture taken. He however did not have as much fun as Gabe did.
Once you added the ingredients simply mix to the right texture. We did add a little bit extra on the conditioner to get the texture we wanted.
I did make clean up fun though. Since there was conditioner in it, they wanted to see how the baking soda reacted with vinegar. It was very sudsy. Where they also speak english in New Zealand some of the words are a little different than ours. To make it fun for the boys I made them a memory game with the new zealand version of our words.
Through out the whole game, Gabe was trash talking big time. Well Sam got revenge, he kicked Gabe's butt at the game. That is Gabe's look of defeat in the picture. He had been working on Pre-Algebra and struggling with it. We are not by any means done with it, just stepping away for a little bit then going to come back to it. In the mean time he really wanted to learn the metric system. Now we needed to learn fun ways to teach the metric system.
I think that his dad hit it out of the park on fun and yumminess for this lesson. Using the ever trusty pinterest he found a recipe for Double Chocolate buns. The recipe was written in Metrics, so for the lesson Sam had to convert it to US standards. Then of course he had to make them to see if he did his math right. We are a gluten free family so as an extra thing Sam transferred the recipe to be gluten free.
The buns turned out supper moist and really yummy. He did a great job on them and they will definitely be on our make again list. Here is the link to the actual recipe if you want to make it yourself. Gottfredsenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07606666159779336353noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36139480.post-38627825364921503492014-09-22T16:32:00.001-05:002014-09-22T16:32:29.207-05:00Learning through art...The boys are doing a lot of art based projects to learn with. Here are just a few from the past week.
This is Sam's Science lesson. Other than learning about animals we are working on learning health/body science. Inspired by an idea I saw on pinterest he drew out the digestive track and how a certain type of food would effect the body when it went through. He has an obsession with New Zealand so he choose the kiwi as his food. All the white spots are flaps that tell how it will effect that part of the body.
They even had art projects this week. This is the scribble art lesson from the 52 art lab book that I got from the library. Gabe's is on the top it is his favorite animal, the orangutan. Sam's is on the bottom. I was really impressed with the pops of color he put in, very unlike him to let go like that. His is the Scottish terrier.
A final project that I had them do was to make a tourism poster for the New Zealand study. Sam's is on the top and Gabe's is on the bottom. I thought that they were both good but needed a little more so I am going to have them do it again soon.
The week started off great. Rob and I got up early to hit the gym at the beginning of the week. I took the following picture on the way there. It was of the sun rise behind us. I love the sun rises here they are truly beautiful. I took this one as a good sign for the upcoming day. It was a good day, then the simplest thing went wrong and it caused the week to become a little more unusual.

I was not fully prepared for the week and I was hurrying to get all prepared for the boys so they could stay on track. However things fell apart when I ran out of ink. I could not print or photocopy anything, Since I really had no extra money right then I had to do things by hand instead of getting ink. So with all my regular work and teaching the kids I fell behind.
I took it as a good learning experience for the boys. I wanted to show them that just because your planned idea of how something should go failed does not mean that it still can not happen. You just need to change your method, The above photo is how I got them their Story of the World maps. I used tracing paper and copied it from the book. Then hung it in the window to make it easier to trace on regular paper. They got their maps still, just took me a little longer. I had to make a couple other things by hand too, they got to see me never quit though. I however am going to buy new ink tonight. Our Civil War study is in the next entry. This one is all about New Zealand and what we covered today.

I started out by having them learn about the money. I made them some play money so that they could see what it all looked like. I just found some images on google printed them out and laminated them. When the lesson was done we put the money in our continent bins.

The boys looked up things such as what was on the money, the history of it, value, and to what it was made from. Did you know it is made from a special type of plastic polymer.

After they started working on art projects. This is their Koru design. It is used in a lot of Maori design, as well as some other cultures. If you want to learn the meaning behind it check it out here. Gabe's design is on the top and Sam's is on the bottom.

After they made totem poles because they are very popular in the Maori culture. Sam's is on the left and Gabe's is on the right.

Finally what I personally felt was the best project of all, Maori Warriors. The warriors have lots of tattoos all over the body (especially the face). Well I was not about to let the boys actually tattoo themselves so we took pictures so they could draw tattoos on themselves that way.

First up Sam. His before on the top of course. His tongue is sticking out because that is supposed to be a threatening look to his opponents. I love how his after one came out. We thought after that we should have taken his glasses off. oops

I feel that the first week back was a success. We had lots of fun which was nice. Make sure to check back and see what I have in store for week two. We have started of our studies by reading and doing the projects from the civil war for kids book. We only read 1 chapter and the boys did the 3 projects at the end of the chapter. First up they made the Freedom Star Quilt. The directions were to make an actual size one, we did not need that though so I just had them draw out one.

After Designing the quilts the second project was to write a message in secret code they used during the war. They each wrote a special message to their dad.

The third project they where supposed to dress themselves to look like the soldiers of each side. I however do not have a whole lot of clothes from the 1860's lying around so I had to come up with a different idea. I had the little wooden people shapes so I had them design them to look the soldiers. The North is of course on the top and south on the bottom. In each photo Gabe's is on the left and Sam's is on the right.

Finally our budding little chef Gabe made us some nachos for lunch. He was so proud of them because he did the whole meal himself. He thought that they looked like a sun exploding.

The boys are keeping such a good pace that they able to keep the day light by choice.
They had sculpting with clay. Which they where to choose a land mark from around the world to sculpt. Then to bake banana bread. That is it, a nice simple day. They actually where able to start on tomorrows work too. We got a chapter of story of the world in for tomorrows lesson.

Sam has a strong desire to move to New Zealand when he is older. Everything he has a choice in becomes about New Zealand. When he got to choose what to do of course he choose something from there. This is the Sky Tower in Auckland. Sam calls it Sky Tower in a wind storm.

This was from the Story of the World lesson. It was made by Sam and is called Napoleons Triangle. Sam was excited at first to do it because the measurements were written in centimeters. Like I said he wants to move to New Zealand, so he is trying to learn about the metric system.

We went gluten free here about a year ago. It has been challenging but overall we are really glad that we have. The hardest part is the baked goods. We love baking here and things just are usually not the same gluten free. Well I have found a brownie recipe that you would never have a clue that it is gluten free. It is one of our favorites if you could not tell. LOL. Check out the recipe here, you will be glad that you did.

In the past the kids have usually fallen behind and I am stressing how to get them caught up. Well they have already gotten lessons done from tomorrows plan. The only one that is falling behind is me. The kids are moving along so quickly I am having a hard time getting to my stuff. Now I just have to figure out how to get them to get their work done and get mine done at the same time.
Well that is a problem this momma can deal with.

Todays lesson was about math. Sam's lesson was not that exciting to show, it was just a worksheet. However he was excited to do it because he is learning about the metric system, something he really wants to do. I will share his lesson on it next week because it involves food. Yummy.

Gabe as you can see from the following pictures he really enjoyed the lesson for him today. We started working with graphs. We focused on making different types. First I read The Tally O'Malley book to him. It was a cute little book that showed about tally graphing.
I started looking back at the older entries and realized how much fun we use to have. They activities were creative and playful. It was time to get back to that. I needed to get back to blogging because I would only want to post fun things so school will have to be fun. Right? It has to be right, makes sense to me. We started back to school today so time to start testing that theory.
It started out kind of slow. Each boy worked on learning about animal habitats. Sam was assigned to design habitats for three different animals. He needed to make sure that it had everything that the animal would need to survive. For Gabe I found an adorable set on Teachers pay Teachers called Habitat for Sale. It had some really great worksheets plus an adorable memory game.
Well there I go disappearing again. Man life really does get going so fast and you lose track of things. I have been so busy living life I forgot about this little blog. I really do want to get back to it. It was such a great way to express things and to share too. Well I think it is time to come back since it has been more than a year. After all there is so many things to share with you guys in our daily life. Well maybe you guys want to follow along as I try to figure out the things in our life. It should be pretty fun either way, so come along for the ride. First thing first until I get back into a rhythm of doing the blog I am not promising a lot of post. Also I think it is time to update the page, give it a face lift. Lets see how this goes and I hope that there are still some of you that are out there wanting to go along for the ride. First up are the ones that Sam likes.

GeoDash Wild Animal Dash --- This app is a lot of fun. It is set up kind of like an arcade game. If you see in the bottom corners there are dials that help control the direction that they move and how to Jump. You move the character around collecting the different things. It then gives them ability of different animals. Once they finish the level they earn a new animal card that has a picture, fast facts, goofy jokes, and weird trivia. Overall a really fun game and the app was free.

WWF Together
This is a new one that we got. Sam really loves learning new info about animals all the time. This is full of amazing info about animals all over the world. Absolutely stunning photos of animals and lots of fun interactive activities. This was also a free app.

We all love this app as well as the Stack the Countries. It is a lot of fun to try to figure out how to balance the countries to make it to the line. The end gives you the total of miles that your stack was, the kids find that really fun to know that. What can I say my boys are a couple of geeks. The game does have a few mini games that they can unlock with more countries that they earn. This app does cost. It goes for a 1.99.
Tiny Countries
This is one of our newest ones. Sam found it really easy and beat the game in one sitting. Gabe however loves it. The little chick is actually a spy that is trying to stop Dr. Evil. Each mission involves answering questions about different countries. This app is also free.

We of course have other apps that we love but when I asked the boys what was their favorite this is what they told me right away. What are some of the apps that you are loving. I would love to hear what they are, leave me a comment to let me know.
Don't look but I have been over taken by wild animals, LOL. Checking out my favorite site, Pinterest, I found these really cute straw faces. The kids were having so much fun with them. Gabe loved trying all the faces at once. If you want your own just check out here and print them off for free. If you also have a kid that loves learning about animals make sure to check out the entire site.

For our world geography we are using the program Expedition Earth. The boys are really loving it. We stick pretty much to the schedule for Gabe but we added in extra country pages for Sam. The program is wonderful full of crafts, recipes, and fun facts. Today we are finishing up our South Korea. Sam actually made supper today, Korean BBQ beef. I was really yummy. The craft was to make jeweled crowns.

Sam's crown is on the left and Gabe's is on the right. This is a top and front view of the crowns. There was no specific directions on how to make them it was the kids decision. The crown was just supposed to represent the metal work that South Koreans did. Sam made his first and added all of the feathers, they represent different things of the Korean Flag. Gabe made his second and idolizes his big brother so it looks just like his.

Then today was supposed to be "Tasty Tuesday". I thought that I would do a little combo.

I will start with the "Tasty Tuesday". We have been busy around here so I have not had much time to have some yummy treats made up. I did get one made up today though. I LOVE Pinterest and found this treat. It is called Pineapple Coconut snowballs. They are super easy to make and really yummy. Check it out.

Now for the goals...
Myself --since Christmas we have been fighting off illness and exhaustion. Because of that we kind of fell behind on cleaning up all of the holiday and project supplies. I have been working on my room this week so the goal is to get it completed by the weekend. I am always working on the kids school schedule. Those boys of mine are always hungry to learn new things and in fun ways, so it keeps me busy on that front. On the craft front I have a couple of projects in the works. Then again I always have something in the Works. LOL

Sam -- We are working on more independent learning with Sam. So his goals are ongoing. We are working with him on his time management skills, so he has a new day planner. He is still working on how to figure out how to set it up. He is working on learning about Monet and his art. This week he is trying to get his research paper about Lincoln done. Plus working on the Human body and Math lessons.

Gabe-- Oh Little Gabe he is ever the hand full. The main goal with him is to get a little focused and not have to be on his case so much about getting the work done. He is covering all his basic subjects as usual. He is looking forward to Friday when we have these two little cuties joining us for a day of school. It should be a lot of fun.

Gottfredsenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07606666159779336353noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36139480.post-51071515987540347882013-01-11T14:32:00.002-05:002013-01-11T14:32:52.431-05:00Things I LoveOur favorite new product around here is the MasterKitz. MasterKitz are these great art kits put out by Kidzaw. They are wonderful kits that allow people to make paintings like the masters. We discovered them at Christmas time and got one for Sam for a gift. He loved it so much that we had to go and get more. The only place that I seem to have noticed them was at Bed, Bath and Beyond. The site does have a list of different stores that sells them. We got our first kit for 30 dollars but after Christmas they were on clearence for half off so we picked up more sets.

The boys now have three sets "Starry Night" by Van Gogh, "Water Lilies" by Monet, and "Tree of Life" by Gustav Klimt. The boys love them and can not wait to get more.

Each kit comes with the supplies to for you to create your own master piece. There is stampers, stencils, paper, paints, and stickers. There is also a booklet that tells you about the artist and some history of there art.
Today I thought that I would share the new book I got from the library. This book takes major art pieces from world famous artist. Then they break them down into easy to do lessons for kids to create there own art pieces.
The first lesson that the boys did was called wax elephant. It is based around the style of Franz Marc. They outline the drawing with crayon (the wax) and then paint the rest in with water color paints.
Sweet little Gabe. First off he is trying to give him self bunny ears. When I asked him why he is giving himself bunny ears he says "I want to give some one bunny ears" LOL this kid cracks me up on a regular basis. Second this kid NEVER wants to do the actual assignment. In this case he did not want to make the animal. So I of course I allowed him to do what he wanted as long he used the technique. So in true Gabe style he did his favorite superhero Iron man with the superhero that Sam created, World Man. I think that is final project is just as amazing as Sam's.
This one has to do with schooling (obvious huh.) It was a presentation put on by Sam. We have always had a hard time teaching Sam history. That is because the kid know so much about it. He has always been an avid reader and his choice of topic, history. We do work on Story of the World with him but more often than not he stops us to add in facts that the other did not mention. We decided that he needed extra in his studies to satisfy him. We thought that we would give him a time period in which to research and then present us with a presentation over the topic. There is no rules just be creative and have fun. First up is the American Revolution.
Ahh time, it really does pass as quickly as the wind. How many times over the last several months have I thought "I really need to get back to blogging" but something comes up to stop it from happening. It makes me kind of sad when that happens because I really do enjoy blogging. So I made a schedule up with topic ideas to make it a little easier to get to blogging. It goes a little something like this...

Mondays - I will do a review of school from the week before and post our goals for the new week.

Tuesdays - I am calling them "Tasty Tuesdays" ( I know an original name, LOL). I will share any of the tasty things that we have going on in our kitchen.

Wednesdays - It is the day to share crafts. They might be school related or personal, maybe even our Etsy shop listings.

Thursdays - A mish mash kind of day, not sure what I will write about. It will all depend on what I feel like that day.

Fridays - "What I love" school edition. I will share different items that we are using that I am in love with. It could be anything books, crafting, games, or more.

The weekends I am going to take off so that I can focus on my family and get ready for the new week.

I know that this is Tuesday so according to the schedule it should be "Tasty Tuesday" but I thought I would start off with the intro back and start in with regular blogging tomorrow. Things have been busy here (imagine that) and we are just getting back to school after a little hiatus, we did kind of an unschooling method over the holidays. Hopefully I can get back into the routine rather quickly. Since starting back to school this week Sam has been thriving. He really loves having structure and routine. One of the things he really needed to work on was time management and goal completion, so we picked him a day planner. He LOVES it. Gabe on the other hand is the same old Gabe, SPECIAL. I love that kid but man can he be a big pain when it comes to getting any of his work done. He is so imaginative and loves to play all the time that he has a really hard time shutting that off.

Thought that I would mention the photos. The top one I took when we went to the local farmers market. I edited it using instagram. The bottom one is of the boys at the botanical gardens. It is actually the picture we used for our Christmas card this year. Well I think it is time to wrap it up. Still got more work to do tonight. I will be back tomorrow for any of the readers that I really hope I still have. Would love to hear from you so leave me a message. Good night all..Gottfredsenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07606666159779336353noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36139480.post-53755014346714836012012-11-09T20:27:00.000-05:002012-11-14T11:54:15.835-05:00Madagascar on Jumpstart

I was asked to do a review of the new MadagascarTM section of JumpstartTM. It is available at jumpstart.com. The MadagascarTM section is modeled after the Central Park Zoo from the film. It starts off with you going around the zoo and looking all the stars of the film, Alex, Melman, Gloria, Marty and the Penguins, play games, and you learn interesting fun facts about each of the animals. You then go on a train ride through Paris, France and Switzerland to Italy. Italy is its own interactive area. There are all sorts of games and videos. You can even climb the Leaning Tower of Piza. My 9 year-old son, Gabe and my 12 year-old son, Sam love the game. Here are some thing they think about MadagascarTM section:
Our only complaint about the game is that you see Paris and Switzerland, but you can't go visit them or any other country in Europe except for Italy.

It is an absolutley wonderful interactive. My family loves it.
Well as Sam kept saying "since we are homeschooled we have to check out a school house on vacation" My boy thinks that he is so funny. In reality I would love an area like this to school the boys in. With some more modern features though. :0)

This was actually taken from our window in the hotel. We were so close to it and the funny thing was that when we first got there we tried finding it on the map. We could not find it, some miss readings were happening. LOL. The building in the picture is actually the kitchen/teachers lounge for the school.

This was actually taken to the front of the school house. If you see there is a chain wrapped around the house. It is attached to the anchor right behind Sam. That was ment to keep the house safe during hurricanes.

The yard had so many statues like this all around. It was Gabes favorite part. He must have taken 25 to 30 pictures of all the different ones.

Sam's favorite part was that when you finished the tour they gave you a diploma. He thought that was so cool that he got to graduate. See I said he was a funny boy. Still got a couple more years before he actually graduates. Well after a partically rough tax season we finally got away for a much needed break, even if it was just for two days. We went to St. Augustine. It was absolutly wonderful time. I feel that I need to sort the trip into multiple entries. This is because Gabe discovered that it was really fun to take pictures and he took pictures of EVERYTHING. If he was not in the picture it is a good chance that he took it. He kept holding the camera and calling it his precious LOL. I am trying to narrow it down to pictures that I think everyone might like. The kid did not make it easy, he took over 500 pictures and most of them were really good (don't worry I will not show all of them)

These top three shots were just random shots from around the fort. It was really beautiful there. We arrived on the first day and could not go on the top because they were having thunderstorm warnings. Our pass (only payed for the adults, kids were free) lasted for a whole week. We could come and go as much as we pleased. So after exploring the inside for a little bit we decided to head back to the hotel and came back the next day. Really glad that we did. We arrived at the opening so no one else was there yet and the kids got to talk with a park ranger a little bit. When the park ranger heard that they were homeschooled he gave them each an activity book about the fort.

This whole section was all about the cannons. The kids loved the cannons. (good thing because the town had cannons all over the place.)

Saying good bye to the Fort. We had to put a limit on it because the kids did really love it and wanted to keep going back. We had to little time there and wanted to see so much more. I will actually put a link for the museum that was right across the road that we went to. It was the Pirate Museum. A very cool museum that I highly recommend. My only problem with the museum is that we were not allowed to take pictures. So sorry no pictures. Check here though if you want to learn more about the museum.

His birthday went really well. He had a lot of fun. Whad his gifts in the morning for him. Gabe gave him the new Serpents Shadow book. The really special thing was the horse that he made for Sam out of peg beads. It was completly his design and he did it all by himself. Sam recieved a few different books. His favorite item though was the calligraphy set and his new legos.
